Missionary Stories with the Millers by Mildred A Martin

Summary: Laura, Timmy, Peter and Sharon Miller give some money to buy Bibles for the Bible Mission and mother tells stories of many missionaries. 29 chapters form 29 stories from all over the world of well-known missionaries such as Gladys Alyward, David Livingstone, John Paton, Hudson Taylor, Jim Elliot, Ida Scudder, Amy Carmichael, and William Carey, as well as many lesser known missionaries. Each chapter has a map of the world showing where the story comes from.

Author's Note: Although the "Miller" family setting is partly fictional, all of the missionary stories are about real people and based upon incidents which actually happened. Many of the details, however, have been supplied by the author's imagination. For example, we do not know if Ato Desta (chapter 7) was singing a song when his would-be murderers were miraculously withheld from harming him; but it is known that the hymn Take the Name of Jesus with You, was one of his favorite songs. I have done my best to provide geographical information and backgrounds of "local color" that are authentic and true-to-life.

Other: Miller Family series. The Miller Family books can be read independently and there is no need to read them in chronological order as each book, and even each chapter stands alone. However, the children do grow older through the stories and thus the chronological order for this series is: Storytime with the Millers, Wisdom and the Millers, Missionary Stories with the Millers, Prudence and the Millers, School Days with the Millers. The ages of the children in this family are quite spread out so the books appeal to a wide age group. Illustrations of women show Mennonite headcoverings.
