Full Text of The Secret of Happiness
Here are the conclusions or experiences of several well-known people on the effectiveness of chasing wealth, pleasure, fame, power and philosophy in order to find happiness.
Wealth
Wise investor and multi-billionaire Warren Buffet has this to say about money-chasing investors: “Nothing sedates rationality like large doses of effortless money. After a heady experience of that kind, normally sensible people drift into behavior akin to that of Cinderella at the ball. They know that overstaying the festivities … will eventually bring on pumpkins and mice. But they nevertheless hate to miss a single minute of what is one [amazing] party. Therefore, the giddy participants all plan to leave just seconds before midnight. There’s a problem, though: They are dancing in a room in which the clocks have no hands.”
Pleasure
On a recent trip to Paris, celebrity Kim Kardashian and her singer husband looked forward to a peaceful and romantic time in their luxury accommodations. But Kim spent the time worrying that her sister was getting too much attention from her husband. A friend reported, “When they were in the most romantic city in the world, they were both so unhappy.”
Fame
Michael Jordan at his Basketball Hall of Fame press conference said, “This is not fun for me. I don’t like being up here for the Hall of Fame because at that time your basketball career is completely over. I was hoping this day would be 20 more years, or actually go in when I’m dead and gone. Because now, all along … you always [could] put shorts on and go out and play. Now, when you get into the Hall of Fame, what else is there to do?”
Famed filmmaker Woody Allen is quoted as saying, “I don’t want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve immortality through not dying.”
Power
The president of the Russian federation, Vladimir Putin, is quoted as saying, “Despite all the achievements of civilization, the human being is still one of the most vulnerable creatures on earth.”
Philosophy
The well-known atheist Richard Dawkins wrote, “The universe we observe has precisely the properties we should expect if there is, at bottom, no design, no purpose, no evil and no good, nothing but blind, pitiless indifference. As that unhappy poet A. E. Housman put it: ‘For Nature, heartless, witless Nature Will neither care nor know.’ DNA neither cares nor knows. DNA just is. And we dance to its music.”
Happiness Is Only Found in Christ
The Lord Jesus Christ said, “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to Me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on Me shall never thirst” (John 6:35).
“He satisfieth the longing soul, and filleth the hungry soul with goodness” (Psalm 107:9).
“Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).
Christ Jesus is able to give us the lasting happiness that we all crave and can’t find anywhere else. God wants you to share His wonderful treasures of love, joy and lasting peace. All these and much more are available to you as a gift from God that costs you absolutely nothing.
God’s gift to you cost Him a tremendous amount. “For God so loved the world, that He GAVE His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). He punished His Son for all the sins of those who trust on Him. You are freed from sin’s penalty by simply accepting His love gift to you. God says, “The wages of sin is death; but the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23).
God even gives the faith necessary to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. “By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the GIFT of God” (Ephesians 2:8).
Accept God’s gift of salvation today and you will discover the true and only source of lasting happiness through the Lord Jesus Christ.
