Setting: Switzerland, mid-twentieth century
Summary: Patrick's mother is ill and his father is rarely around. When he and his sister hear that their father is leaving the family and wants to divorce, their hearts are broken and their lives turned upside-down. 14 year old Carol turns to her books and cuts herself off from her friends while Patrick turns to find excitement with a gang of teenaged boys, all who are suffering from preoccupied, unloving parents and broken families.
The leader of the gang, 17 year old Cyril decides to steal a mini van and take his gang for a fun day skiing on the mountains. But their day is ruined when a blizzard sets in. On the journey home, the unlicensed driver (Cyril) loses control of the van and it plunges down an embankment leaving many of the boys injured and three needing lengthy hospitalisations. The uninjured boys are sent to remand school and all are fined for their escapade. Meanwhile, some of Patrick's Christian friends who he had rejected rally around and support the boys. Once recovered, Patrick and his friends re-form a gang with their leader a young Christian man who leads Patrick to the Lord. This new gang achieves many things within the next year, not the least is the purchase of a replacement for the van they had stolen.
Thus these boys learn that purpose in life and real happiness can only be found in the Lord Jesus.
