Summary: Teddy is a boy with a fertile imagination and a great story teller. His favourite story is that of his father's last battle. One day as Teddy so proudly displays his button that was from his father’s uniform who died in the war, the new little girl in town shows much contempt for him and his “story.” Infuriated, Teddy feels hatred for her in his heart. Always into mischief, Nancy becomes his enemy and a few scraps occur. The pastor, a wise man of God, counsels Teddy on how to be a soldier for Christ. As God works in Teddy’s heart, those around him see Christ begin to shine through Teddy in his successes and his failures.
Message: The reality that we are either on the Lord's side or on Satan's side. We are to be soldiers for Christ and our banner is Love. The daily need to fight against the old nature but the only way we can be conquerors is through strength found through resting in Christ.
Other: Fiction. Teddy's imaginations and stories do include some about fairies/elves/goblins. In the book no adult agrees or disagrees with these stories as Teddy only tells them to his friends and classmates. No age is given for Teddy or any of the other children but it would seem that he is aged somewhere between 7 and 11. Originally published in 1890.
