A Marvelous Universe | |
1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 Estimated stars in the universe.
There are 2,030,000,000,000,000,000 cubes of empty space in the universe with sides this size for every bit of material the size of a grain of sand.
Observable diameter of the universe. 880,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 meters.
LBV 1806-20 is the brightest star at 40,000,000 times the brightness of the sun and defies man’s current theories of star size.
A Marvelous Earth | |
1,338,000,000,000,000,000,000 Liters of water in the oceans.
Krill weigh 1,000,000,000,000 pounds or about 2 times the mass of all human beings.
A single ant colony in Japan has 306,000,000 workers or about the population of the United States.
The tallest mountain measured from sea level is Mt. Everest at 8,848m. The tallest measured from the sea floor is Man Hawaii at 10,203m. However the tallest of all would be Mt. Chimborazo in Ecuador if you measured from the center of the earth it would be 6,384,404m tall. In fact the beaches of Ecuador are “taller” than Mt. Everest. It all depends on your reference point.
A Marvelous Body | |
86,400,000,000 of the cells in your body will die today.
12ft of nerve fibers, 1,300 nerve cells, 100 sweat glands, 3,000,000 cells and 9 ft. of blood vessels fit into an area of skin the size of this 1 square inch.
There are 100,000,000,000 neurons in the human brain.
A Marvelous Maker | |
We are in awe when we look at the stunning precision, complexity and absolute grandeur of the creation that surrounds us. We and the universe we live in have been stunningly created and tuned. The only appropriate response is to say to God “marvelous are Thy works; and that my soul [knows]” (Psalm 139:14).
It isn’t the mere craftsmanship from a set of materials but the creation from nothing. “Let all the inhabitants of the world stand in awe of Him. For He spake, and it was done” (Psalm 33:8-9).
God the creator takes an active interest in the persons that He has made. He doesn’t walk away from us but rather takes a deep and personal interest in each of us. Even details too small for us to bother with are carefully watched by Him, “the very hairs of your head are all numbered” (Luke 12:7), while He maintains what He has created, “by Him all things consist” (Colossians 1:17).
Man the Sinner | |
Sadly you and I haven’t honored and served our Creator. We have “changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator” (Romans 1:25). We measure our behavior according to our imperfect and shifting standards. He measures it by His unwavering and perfect character. His verdict is “all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
The consequences for that sin are disease and death that have invaded the creation we now live in. God has told us with perfect clarity what we have earned, “the wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). People have fun measuring the tallest mountain using different reference points. It’s fascinating to think that lying on a beach you might be “higher” than at the top of Mt. Everest. It isn’t fun to realize that “good people” don’t exist when measured against the only acceptable standard—God’s holiness. “There is none righteous, no, not one” (Romans 3:10).
Jesus the Saviour | |
God, who deeply loves each one that He has created, accepted the immense price of ridding His creation of sin. “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life. For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through Him might be saved” (John 3:16-17).
Jesus Christ, God’s Son, became a man and was hated by the very ones He came to save. Far more seriously He was willing to face the judgment that a righteous God demands for sin. God “made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21). It is really impossible for us to measure the immensity of the awfulness of sin to God. It is certainly far greater than the massive universe we live in. But Jesus in love to us paid the punishment for sin for those who trust Him.
How Will We Respond? | |
We are held accountable by a holy God for our behavior and thoughts. Excuses for our conduct that sound powerful when expressed to other humans will be worthless in the face of a God who created those 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 stars by “the breath of His mouth” (Psalm 33:6). At the moment we can tell compelling stories of our rightness in our own minds but soon each will have to “give account of himself to God” (Romans 14:12).
God commands “all men everywhere to repent” (Acts 17:30). This isn’t a gentle suggestion for our approval or a recommendation from an expert committee. An authoritative command from our Creator cannot be indefinitely ignored. Will you humbly bow and receive God’s offer of mercy and pardon now, neglect to respond to His command, or refuse to acknowledge His authority? Those who repent now forever enjoy His love. Those who reject Him forever receive the wages of their sin.
