Full Text of There Is Nothing Left for You to Do
Many years ago Nicholas was raised in religion, but he was notorious for his pursuit of pleasure. However, like you and me, he had both a memory and a conscience.
Nicholas began to remember the many wicked things he had done and the warnings he had received. His conscience convicted him. He thought, “It may be true that there is an eternal punishment for sinners!” He had heard of the “lake of fire” and thought, “If anyone is ever likely to be there, it is myself — for I have never seen or heard of anyone who has sinned as I have done.”
His sins lost their pleasure. The horrors of hell haunted him — he longed for deliverance from his past, from his guilt — from himself! He despaired of ever discovering a way for sinners to be saved. He feared that a long life of penance and a thousand years in purgatory would not be enough to find the favor of a holy God. What could he do?
He had heard of a monastery whose rules and restrictions were the most severe of any, and he decided to go there to seek his soul’s salvation, if possible. He would become a monk and endure all of the harsh discipline demanded, if only he could be sure of pardon.
That monastery was about 1,500 miles from his home, and he walked the whole way because he thought that the long, hot journey might count as a part of his penance. Finally, faint and fearful, he reached the old building and rang the bell. An old monk slowly opened the door.
“What do you want?” asked the aged monk.
“I want to be saved,” replied Nicholas.
“Tell me what you mean,” said the old man.
Nicholas answered, “I have been a far greater sinner than anyone I ever heard of. I do not think it is possible that I can be saved. But I am willing to do whatever may be done, if only I may have a faint hope of escaping eternal punishment. If it must be by spending all of the rest of my life in penance, the harder it is, the more I shall be thankful. Only tell me what to do, and I will gladly do it.”
A Surprising Answer
“If you are ready to do what I tell you,” replied the old monk, “you will go back to Germany. There was One down here who has done the whole work in your place before you came — and He has finished it. He did it instead of you, so there is nothing left for you to do! It is all done.”
“Who has done it?” asked a stunned Nicholas.
“Did you never hear of the Lord Jesus Christ?” replied the old man.
“Yes, of course I have heard of Him.”
“Do you know where He is?” enquired the old man.
“Yes, of course I know. He is in heaven.”
“But tell me,” said the old man, “do you know why He is in heaven?”
“No, except that He is always in heaven.”
“He was not always in heaven,” replied the old man. “He came down here to do the work you want to do yourself. He came down here to bear the punishment of your sin. He is in heaven now because the work is done. If it were not so, He would still be here. He came down to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself!
“Do you not know what He said on the cross? ‘It is finished.’ What was finished? The work you want to begin! And now, if you want to do something worse than all you have ever done — you may cast contempt on the blessed and perfect work of the Son of God by trying to do what only He could do and has finished. It would be as if you said, ‘Christ has not done enough. I must add to the work which He has declared is finished.’
“I stay here where Christ is insulted because I am old and can only walk to the gate. But you can go, and I urge you to go back to your friends and to tell them what the Lord has done for you.”
Said Nicholas, “I stayed three days, and the old man told me much more of the work of the Lord Jesus — not only what His death had done for me, but also how He had risen again to give me eternal life and how He had won a place for me in heaven, above the angels, where He is waiting for me and for all who believe in Him. Now I tell any who will listen the wonderful news of the perfect work of Christ.”
“Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God” (1 Peter 3:18).
“Now once in the end of the world hath He appeared to put away sin by the sacrifice of Himself” (Hebrews 9:26).

A 4 Letter Religion

Full Text of A 4 Letter Religion
“There is a big difference between your religion and mine,” a Christian lady said to a friend in their discussion of religious beliefs.
“In what way?” he asked.
“Your religion has only two letters in it, and mine has four,” she replied.
It seems that this lady’s friend was someone who felt it was necessary to work his way into heaven. He faithfully followed the ordinances and ceremonies that his religion required in his attempt to be accepted by God into heaven at the end of his life. He was basing his acceptance on what the Bible calls “dead works.”
He did not understand the Christian lady’s reference to the two letters and the four letters, and so he asked, “What do you mean by two letters and four letters?”
“Let me explain,” said the lady. “Your religion is d‑o, two letters, a DO religion, whereas mine is d‑o‑n‑e, four letters, DONE!”
The discussion ended with that comment, and the lady went on her way. Her simple explanation remained in his thoughts, however, causing the man to do some serious soul-searching. As he considered the comparison of the two words, the difference became evident. He had been trying to follow rules and regulations devised and acceptable by man’s standards, but God offered forgiveness of sins through the work that Christ finished on the cross — Christianity.
The two letters and four letters was an unusual and original way of explaining the gospel, and it was very appropriate for this man who had been taught that he must follow strict religious laws in order to acquire the reward of heaven. He realized that he had been a legalist, hoping that keeping these laws would cancel his sin, whereas the Bible teaches that any works we do cannot cancel even one sin. “We are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags” (Isaiah 64:6). “Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He [saves] us” (Titus 3:5).
The next time he saw his friend, he told her, “Now I can also say that my religion is d‑o‑n‑e, DONE.”
The Spirit of God had shown him that his religious deeds were worthless in removing his sins, but that all God required to settle the sin question was to accept the finished work of Christ. He understood that it was no longer a question of what he could do for God, but of what God’s Son had done for him.
The matter of his sins was settled. What a joy and relief it was for this man to know that what he had been striving and hoping for was already completely finished — DONE — almost 2000 years ago on the cross! Now he could look forward with certainty to an eternity in heaven.
Christ has finished all that God required. He has put away sin and satisfied the claims of divine justice. He has conquered Satan, taking the sting out of death. He has glorified God here on earth where He has been dishonored. He has brought in everlasting righteousness. All of this is included in these four letters: d‑o‑n‑e.
Will you exchange the deceptive belief and system of “doing” for the joy and Bible truth of Christ’s having already “done” what God requires?
Question: “What must I do to be saved?”
Answer: “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ” (Acts 16:30‑31).
“By grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast” (Ephesians 2:8‑9).
Nothing either great or small,         Nothing, sinner, no; Jesus did it, did it all,          Long, long ago.
Cast your deadly doings down,          Down at Jesus’ feet; Stand in Him — in Him alone —           Gloriously complete.

A Last Warning!

Full Text of A Last Warning
Sunday afternoon I was distributing tracts when I met two young miners coming slowly toward me. I held out a booklet to each. Each took it and thanked me. One, a strong, healthy, handsome young man, read the title aloud: Just in Time.
A deep feeling of solem­nity filled me, and looking straight into his frank, open face, I said, “Yes, my friend, and God grant you may be just in time for heaven.”
Going home I prayed, “Lord, save him.”
That Tuesday night, I had gone to bed when a loud knocking at the door made me call out, “Who’s there?”
“Sir, are you the gentleman who gave a young man a booklet on Sunday afternoon called Just in Time?”
“Yes, I am.”
“Please, come at once,” he said.
I dressed quickly and hurried out into the summer night. On our way he told me that his mate had gone down the shaft that afternoon as usual, and having jumped out of the bucket before it reached the bottom, he was caught and horribly crushed. He was lying there, his friend said, in terrible agony, unable to speak, and just gasping for breath, while his life was ebbing away.
THE LAST MESSAGE
By the time the young man had finished his story, we reached the house. The strong man whom I had seen only two days before in the full vigor of youth now lay abso­lutely helpless. He stared straight at me as I en­tered and tried to speak.
I read to him: “God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoso­ever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). I told him of the love of God in desiring his salvation and of the power of the blood of Christ to save him. I told him he was lost and ruined by nature, but that Jesus came to seek and to save the lost — that Jesus had been seeking him and wanted him — that having done the work by which sin could be put away out of God’s sight, He could now give the knowledge of the forgiveness of all his sins through His precious blood.
I read to him the story of the father and the prodigal (Luke 15) and also the brief prayers of the Pharisee and the publican in chapter 18, repeating this verse: “Him that cometh to Me I will in no wise cast out” (John 6:37).
FINAL MOMENTS
His face changed; hope lighted it up. He signaled for a drink; his wife held the glass of water to his lips. He drank a lit­tle and then, to the amazement of all, spoke in a clear voice, with his eyes looking up as though he saw the One to whom he was speaking: “Just in time! God be merciful to me a sinner, for Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen!”
He had barely uttered the last word when his head fell back on the pillow; a little shivering sigh escaped him, and he was gone.
“He that heareth My word, and believeth on Him that sent Me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life” (John 5:24).
POSSIBLY YOUR LAST WARNING
I will never forget that scene. It was a warning word from the brink of eternity, and God used it for blessing. May it be a warning and a blessing to you, if you are still unsaved.
“There is but a step between me and death” (1 Samuel 20:3).
“The Lord is … not willing that any should perish” (2 Peter 3:9).
“Behold, now is the accepted time” (2 Corinthians 6:2). “Today if ye will hear His voice, harden not your hearts” (Hebrews 3:15).
“Boast not thyself of tomorrow; for thou knowest not what a day may bring forth” (Proverbs 27:1).

WHY?
“Because He hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteous­ness by that man whom He hath ordained; whereof He hath given assurance unto all men, in that He hath raised Him from the dead” (Acts 17:31).
“Because there is wrath, beware lest He take thee away with His stroke: then a great ransom cannot deliver thee” (Job 36:18).
“All have sinned, and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).
WHO?
“This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15).
“When we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the un­godly” (Romans 5:6).
“I am not come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance” (Matthew 9:13).
HOW?
“God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever be­lieveth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).

“Flee from the wrath to come” (Matthew 3:7).

“Whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire” (Revelation 20:15).
FOR WHAT?
“Being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ” (Romans 5:1).
“To wait for His Son from heaven, whom He raised from the dead, even Jesus, which delivered us from the wrath to come” (1 Thessalonians 1:10).
“There shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and His servants shall serve Him: and they shall see His face; and His name shall be in their foreheads” (Revelation 22:3‑4).
WHEN?
“Now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation” (2 Corinthians 6:2).
“Come now, and let us reason together, saith the Lord: though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow; though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool” (Isaiah 1:18).

It's All in the Blood

WITHOUT SHEDDING OF BLOOD IS NO REMISSION (Hebrews 9:22).
Sickness had suddenly stopped a man’s active business life and kept him from his place in the church where he had a respected role. He had never before considered his own need in the sight of God, or where he would go when he died.
A friend came to see him and mentioned to the sick merchant, “I have more than once been near death, and I can’t describe what peace I enjoyed at the thought of meeting God, simply trusting in the precious blood of Jesus Christ as my only right to be there.”
The sick man raised himself on his elbow and said, “I’ve been thinking about the same subject a lot lately. I haven’t been sufficiently zealous in religion to say I can look into the future as you do. I would give everything I have if I could.”
“Religion gives no right to heaven,” replied his visitor. “Religion never gave anybody peace with God. Only the blood of Jesus Christ can do that.”
The sick man seemed bewildered. He had thought that religion was the very best thing in the world and that when people spoke of “conversion” or “salvation,” they simply expressed in that way, and according to their own peculiar creed, the same thing as he called “religion.” His friend saw his confusion and said, “May I read you a short passage from the Bible?” With permission he read an account of the first Passover.
“They shall take to them every man a lamb. … Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of the first year: ye shall take it out from the sheep, or from the goats … and the whole assembly of the congregation of Israel shall kill it in the evening. And they shall take of the blood, and strike it on the two side posts and on the upper door post of the houses, wherein they shall eat it. … For I will pass through the land of Egypt this night, and will smite all the firstborn in the land of Egypt … and against all the gods of Egypt I will execute judgment: I am the Lord. And the blood shall be to you for a token upon the houses where ye are: and when I see the blood, I will pass over you. … For the Lord will pass through to smite the Egyptians; and when He seeth the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the Lord will pass over the door, and will not suffer the destroyer to come in unto your houses to smite you” (Exodus 12:3‑23).
“It was the blood shed and sprinkled, the blood trusted, and only it,” he said, “that gave safety to all within the houses that night. All under the shelter of the blood were safe; all outside it were doomed.”
There was a solemn silence in the room as he finished reading, and then the sick man said slowly, with great emotion, “It’s all in the blood. I see it now. How many are trusting in their own righteousness and good works to take them or to help them into heaven, whereas God declares that the precious blood of Christ, trusted in by the sinner, is his only shelter from coming wrath. “The blood of Jesus Christ His Son [God’s only begotten Son] cleanseth us from ALL sin” (1 John 1:7). “Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ, and thou shalt be saved” (Acts 16:31).
