The Settling Day
Full text of The Settling Day
A farmer, who prided himself on being an atheist, wrote to the editor of a newspaper:
Sir, I have been trying an experiment. I have a field of corn which I plowed on Sunday, I planted it on Sunday, I did the cultivating on Sunday, I gathered the crop on Sunday, and on Sunday I hauled it into my barn. And I find that I have more corn per acre than has been gathered by any of my neighbors during this October.
The farmer’s sneer is obvious. By deliberately choosing to do all the work connected with his cornfield on the Lord’s Day, he had challenged God to express disapproval by giving him a disappointing result. Instead, he had reaped an exceptionally good crop.
A Crucial Footnote
But the editor of the paper drew attention to one overlooked fact in a footnote:
God does not always settle His accounts in October.
This helps explain the present prosperity of many who defy the holy Word of God. The truth is that the present world and the life of the individual on earth aren’t adequate for the display of divine righteousness. God does not always settle His accounts in October!
He sometimes meets sin with His obvious displeasure and gives those who obey Him a quick reward for their faithfulness. But this is by no means always the case. The conclusion to draw is, not that God is indifferent to sin and that His government of men is a sham, but that the reckoning day is future.
The Scriptures give repeated testimony that a judgment day is coming when “God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil” (Ecclesiastes 12:14). Every seeming injustice will be set right, “so that a man shall say, Verily, there is a reward for the righteous: verily He is a God that judgeth in the earth” (Psalm 58:11).
I am not assuming that, like the farmer, you have any wish to challenge or defy God. But does the judgment day scare you? Remember, there will be no mercy but strict justice. Sins that demand punishment will then certainly be punished.
God’s Plan
God must and will judge your sins. Does this concern you? Are you prepared to face God’s just judgment and punishment for them?
God offers you an alternate. In love He sent His Son into the world, so that He could take your place and be punished for your sins. He offers His Son as your substitute. He came and died for you. He suffered to pay for the sins of each one who trusts in Him as their Saviour. Have you accepted Him as your substitute? If you have, you no longer face judgment.
What good news! How good to know that God has acted. He has Himself provided the needed sacrifice and has dealt with our sins on the ground of it. The only way to personally benefit from God’s plan is to receive it by faith in Christ as applicable in all its glorious results to oneself. “He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life” (John 3:36). And such a one will never come into judgment.
Other than this great redemption plan, there is no hope for anyone. Sooner or later every unrepentant sinner will be broken by God. The settling day will come.
God “hath appointed a day, in the which He will judge the world in righteousness” (Acts 17:31).

Moose the Fireman
The full text of Moose the Fireman
Big, powerful and brave Moose served as fire chief in the small town where he lived.
Early one morning the alarm sounded and Moose reached the scene before most of his firemen. Smoke was pouring from the windows of a large two-story house as Moose rushed up and forced open the front door. What a sight met his eyes! At the top of the burning staircase stood a frightened mother holding two little children, one by each hand. Behind her in a stroller lay a baby.
In a moment Moose raced up the stairs, picked up the terror-stricken mother in his massive arms, threw her across his shoulders and told her to hang on. Then he snatched up the two older children, one in each arm.
But what about the baby, you ask? Turning to the carriage, he bent low and, grasping her clothes with his teeth, he picked her up.
Then staggering beneath his precious load, he descended the flaming stairs. Just as he reached the door, the staircase collapsed behind him. He was just in time!
Thanks to the courage and bravery of Moose, all were saved from fiery death. Noble fireman! Thank the Lord for our brave firefighters!
This true, heroic act only recalls to mind the more glorious sacrifice of our Lord Jesus Christ. He laid down His life to save poor, helpless sinners from the eternal fire of hell — because He loved us.
This world is soon to be destroyed by the awful judgment of God against sin. “Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners” (1 Timothy 1:15). He is the only hope of salvation, and He waits to save you.
Have you believed on Him? Come to Him now, for “he that believeth … shall be saved” (Mark 16:16).
“If thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved” (Romans 10:9).
There is only one thing that can take away sins and make us pure and clean in God’s sight, and that is the blood of Jesus.
“The blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanseth us from all sin” (1 John 1:7). Have your sins been washed away in His precious blood?
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
What glorious words are these!
1. “God so loved” — the most blessed Friend with the largest heart.
2. “The world” — the greatest number of sinners, and enemies too.
3. “Gave His Son” — the best of all gifts.
4. “Whosoever” — the widest invitation.
5. “Believeth on Him” — the easiest and the only way to be saved.
6. “Should not perish” — the greatest deliverance.

Life for Life: A True Tale of Two Brothers
Full Text of Life for Life - A True Tale of Two Brothers
Many years ago, there were two Chinese brothers. Though they lived together, they were very different. As is common in Chinese culture, we will refer to them as Elder Brother and Younger Brother.Younger Brother was wild and willful. His primary interests seemed to be only pleasure and plunder. Elder Brother, on the other hand, was a respectable and responsible man. He was very distressed by Younger Brother’s behavior and often warned Younger Brother that he was headed for serious trouble. Elder Brother truly loved Younger Brother — and the more Younger Brother laughed at Elder Brother, the more Elder Brother prayed to God for him.
Very late one evening, Younger Brother rushed into their house, calling out for Elder Brother and exclaiming, “Help me! Hide me! I have killed a man! The police are after me! The blood …” Oh yes, the blood! It was on his clothes. His guilt was plain. What could he do? Where or how could he hide?
Elder Brother responded, “Quick! Change clothes with me.” Younger Brother quickly complied. The police came. There stood Elder Brother in the bloody clothes. He said nothing and did not resist. The police assumed that they had caught the criminal.
Trials were shorter in those days. Since Elder Brother said nothing more than what was required — and said nothing to defend himself — his trial was soon over, and the judge condemned him to death.
However, the evening before his scheduled execution, he asked his jailer to provide him with the material to write a letter and to promise to deliver that letter after his death. Something about Elder Brother appealed to the jailer. He agreed to provide the necessary materials, and he promised to arrange for the letter to be delivered after Elder Brother’s death.
The next morning, Elder Brother paid the penalty for Younger Brother’s crime. A little while later, a messenger knocked on Younger Brother’s door. Fearfully, he opened the door and accepted the letter.
Then, Younger Brother opened the letter — and he cried out as he read it! What did it say? The heart of the letter was this message:
Tomorrow, dressed in your clothes, I will die in your place. And you, dressed in my clothes, will live a righteous and holy life, in my memory, from now on.
Now, Younger Brother was so upset that he hardly knew what to do. He thought that just possibly his brother had not yet been executed. He rushed out to see the judge. He showed him the letter and confessed to his crimes, to the killing, and to his cowardice. But the judge told him that his brother had already died in his place. Seeing how the law had been satisfied by such a sacrifice of love, the judge declined to press any further charges against Younger Brother.
Younger Brother was free! But at what a price! How do you suppose his brother’s sacrifice affected him? I will tell you:
Younger Brother saw his guilt as never before. He saw his brother’s love as never before. He turned to God, and he discovered that God’s greater love and power, through Jesus Christ, could deliver him from what he had been and would enable him to live as Elder Brother had lived. His old friends found it difficult to believe that he had become so different. When invited to go with them where he and they had gone before, he said, “In my brother’s clothes I cannot go there. He would never go there.”
After a life of service to God and man, he was buried as he had requested — in Elder Brother’s clothes. Now, Elder Brother and Younger Brother live together again.
That is a great true story, but God wrote a better one. God sent His Son to die in your place. Jesus died to give you life — and He lives to live His life in those who trust in Him. Please carefully consider what God says in His Word, the Bible:
“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16).
“He [God] hath made Him [Jesus] to be sin for us, who knew no sin, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (2 Corinthians 5:21).
“Who His own self bare our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, being dead to sins, should live unto righteousness: by whose stripes ye were healed” (1 Peter 2:24).
“If, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of His Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by His life” (Romans 5:10).
“The wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). New life in the risen Christ who died for you! Do you have it, and do you live it?
