Not Regina by Christmas Carol Kauffman

From the back of the book:
The 1500s were stirring times in Europe. Luther nailed his ninety-five theses to a church door in Germany, exploding a powder keg of unrest that seethed for decades. Against this background, Regina Strahm found herself caught between two religious factions in Switzerland. Her parents repeatedly warned her against the Anabaptist heresy, but why then did Zwingli's official religion fail to satisfy? And why were the Anabaptists willing to die for their faith? Regina discovered why, and found a joy she had never before known.

Summary: Regina is a 17 year old Swiss girl lives in turbulent times. As more neighbours and friends turn Anabaptist and are thus imprisoned or go into exile, Regina wonders whether the Bible would provide her with the answers to the questions and the emptiness of her heart. Lack of finances prevent her family buying a Bible and the local pastor teaches strongly against the new ideas. When Regina is offered work as a servant for the pastor's family she hopes to find the answers to her questions. However, she goes more and more restless as she finds no answers there but instead meets those considered to be the enemy but who possess a peace that Regina longs for. Through some of her family members, Regina is able to learn more about the Bible and the way of salvation through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Facing persecution and torture, Regina remains firm but an unexpected twist leads to her finding a way of escape.

Other: This book is historical fiction. While some of the characters are actual historical people, Regina and her family and friends are fictional. This book does include a romance.

Convicted of Murder! A Message From Death Row...

Extract:
I've been sentenced to die in the electric chair for the crime of murder. I saw the inside of my first jail at the age of ten, and my first prison at thirteen. At 27, more than half my life has been spent outside the law, and almost all of it away from God.
I live under the shadow of death, but I've never been happier! Stone walls and steel bars are my home and the electric chair is my future, but I praise God daily. Why? Because He saved this terrible sinner. When I die, I will go home to heaven to be with my Saviour for all eternity.
Sometimes a great shock is needed to open a man's eyes. In my case it was the murder I committed. Day in and day out I trembled in fear, without any peace...

Me & Nobbles by Amy Le Feuvre

Summary: Robert Allonby, known as Master Bobby to those of the stuffy old house, lives with his grandmother, an aunt, an uncle, and Nobbles, a walking stick which is his make-believe friend. His mother is dead, and his father has vanished. Bobby doesn’t feel accepted where he is.With an eager eye fixed on the high road, he waits expectantly for his absent father to return to take him away on adventures around the world. At such a tender age, Bobby learns about the white-robed people that enter through the gates into that eternal city. While his cherished walking stick gets him into much mischief, Bobby thinks often of getting his own robes clean so that he can enter the gates. The eagerness and energy of youth are keen tools for the spread of the Gospel.

From the back of the book:
It was a very dull house indeed, the visitor thought, yet a few things puzzled her.
Once she heard a patter of childish feet along the corridor past her door. Then passing a broad staircase window, she noticed upon its broad ledge a little bunch of daisies. As she mused, she distinctly heard a childish chuckle of laughter far away.
"Is your house haunted?" she asked Miss Egerton at dinner.
"Indeed it is not. Why do you ask?"
"There is no child in the house, is there?"
"Yes," replied Miss Egerton, "there is Vera's child. He has a good nurse, who looks after him. A child in the house is rather a nuisance...
Meanwhile, Bobby was talking in a rapid undertone to Nobbles, who always understood, and smiled into the face of his master. Nobbles was a walking stick, with a little ivory head, and it shared all the secrets and plans which only a lonely little boy could have concocted.
"I know my father will come for me one day and take me away with himself! I finks every night when I'm in bed about it. He'll knock at my door sudden, and I'll say, 'Come in.' And then I'll see him!"
Oh Bobby, where is your father now? How long must you wait until he comes and claims you?

Perfect Peace by Marion Schoeberlein

Full text:
O Lord, how happy we could be,
If we would put full trust in Thee –
If we from foolish fears would rest
And be assured that Thou above,
In perfect wisdom, grace, and love,
Art working for our best.
Lord, make these faithless hearts of ours
Good lessons learn from fields of flowers;
First, let our many worries cease;
Then, like the flowers, keep us still
And leave all things to Thy gracious will
And so find perfect peace.
Marion Schoeberlein
Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Isaiah 26:3

Storm Clouds by Beverly J Anderson

Full text:
I cannot say that I am glad when storm clouds come,
When days and nights are burdensome and long.
I like the peacefulness of sunny days
When life is bright and in my heart’s a song
And yet...I know the wisdom I have learned
Or any courage that my life displays
Was never gained in golden sunlit hours
But rather grew from dark and stormy days.
I’ve felt God’s presence closer ‘mid the storm
As I relied on Him to guide my way
And through my trails found a stronger faith
Enabling me to better face each day.
And so, I would not ask God NOT to send
Those testings fashioned by His loving hand;
For ALL things work together for my good
And things once questioned...now I understand.

He Gathers Every Teardrop by Glenda Fullton Davis

Full text:
Regardless of the circumstance,
Regardless of the fear,
Regardless of the pain we bear,
Regardless of the tear,
Our God is ever in control,
Performing as He should,
And He has promised in His word
To work things for our good
But as a loving Father would,
He sometimes lets us cry
To cleanse the hurt out of our heart,
To wash it from our eye.
Yet gently gathers He the tears
Within His hands to stay
Until He turns them into pearls
And gives them back someday.

We Are Not Alone by Robert E Mortenson

Full text:
How good it is to realize that God will undertake
For all who, burdened, cry to Him, “Help me for Jesus’ sake.”
For through His Son He has for all not only sin’s release,
But grace for every trial of life. He keeps the soul in peace.
Sometimes when we implore the Lord to meet some special need,
It seems as if His ear is deaf, no matter how we plead.
But up above the leaden skies, He watches o’er His own;
He sees our tear-drops, hears our cry. No, we are not alone!
For every trial, care, and cross, He giveth us more grace,
And every storm-sky has its rift that shows His loving face.
Many are the afflictions of the righteous, it is true,
But He delivers, bless His name. He sees His children through.

Faithful is He by John E Zoller

Full text:
Are you passing through a testing,
Is your pillow wet with tears?
Do you wonder what the reason,
Why it seems God never hears?
Why it is you have no answer
To your oft-repeated plea,
Why the heaven still is leaden
As you wait on bended knee?
Do you wonder as you suffer,
Whether God does understand,
And if so, why he ignores you,
Fails to hold you in His hand?
Do black doubts creep in, assail you,
Fears without, and fears within,
Till your brave heart almost falters
And gives way to deadly sin?
All God’s testings have a purpose—
Some day you will see the light.
All He asks is that you trust Him,
Walk by faith and not by sight.
Do not fear when doubts beset you,
Just remember—He is near;
He will never, never leave you,
He will always, always hear.
Faithful is He who has promised,
He will never let you fall,
Daily will the strength be given
Strength for each and strength for all.
He will gladly share pain with you,
He will gladly give you peace.
Till your tired and weary body
Finds its blessed, glad release.
When the darkened veil is lifted,
Then, dear heart, you’ll understand
Why it is you had to suffer,
Why you could not feel His hand
Giving strength when it was needed,
Giving power and peace within
Giving joy thru tears and trial,
Giving victory over sin.
So till then just keep on trusting,
Thru the sunshine and the rain,
Thru the tears and thru the heart-aches,
Thru the smiles and thru the pain—
Knowing that our Father watches,
Knowing daily strength He’ll give,
Victory for each passing hour,
This is life, so let us live!

Never Alone by Elizabeth Osborn

Full text:
I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee. Hebrews 13:5
I’m never alone in the morning
As I rise at the break of day,
For Jesus who watched through the darkness
Says, “Lo, I am with you alway.”
I’m never alone at my table
Though loved ones no longer I see;
For dearer than all who have vanished
Is Jesus who breaks bread with me.
I’m never alone through the daylight,
Though nothing but trials I see;
Though the furnace be seven times heated
The ‘form of the fourth’ walks with me.
I’m never alone at the twilight
When darkness around me doth creep
And specters press hard round my pillow.
He watches and cares while I sleep.
I’m walking and talking with Jesus
Each day as I travel along.
I’m never alone. Hallelujah!
The joy of the Lord is my song.

And heart doth feel bereft, and lone, and sad.
GOD EVER CARES! His heart is ever tender!
His love doth never fail nor show decay.
The loves of earth, though strong and deep, may perish;
But His shall never, never pass away.
GOD EVER CARES! And thus when life is lonely,
When blessings one time prized are growing dim,
The heart may find a sweet and sunny shelter--
A refuge and a resting place in Him.
GOD EVER CARES! And Time can never change Him.
His nature is to care, and love, and bless.
And drearest, darkest, emptiest days afford Him
But means to make more sweet His own caress.

The Valley

Full text:
I have been through the valley of weeping,
The valley of sorrow and pain;
But the “God of all comfort” was with me,
At hand to uphold and sustain.
As the earth needs the clouds and the sunshine,
Our souls need both sorrow and joy;
So HE places us oft in the furnace,
The dross from the gold to destroy.
When He leads through some valley of trouble,
His powerful hand we can trace;
For the trials and sorrows He sends us
Are part of His lessons of grace.
Oft we shrink from the purging and pruning,
Forgetting the Husbandman knows
The deeper the cutting and paring,
The richer the cluster that grows.
Well He knows that affliction is needed;
He has a wise purpose in view,
And in the dark valley He whispers,
“Hereafter thou’lt know what I do.”
As we travel though life’s shadowed valley,
Fresh springs of His love ever rise;
And we learn that our sorrows and losses
Are blessings just sent in disguise.
So we’ll follow whatever He leadeth,
Though pathways be dreary or bright;
For we’ve proof that our God can give comfort,
Our God can give songs in the night.

A Very Present Help by Annie Johnson Flint

Full text:
He’s helping me now this moment,
Though I may not see it or hear,
Perhaps by a friend far distant,
Perhaps by a stranger near,
Perhaps by a spoken message,
Perhaps by the printed word;
In ways that I know and know not,
I have the help of the Lord.
He’s helping me now – this moment,
However I need it most,
Perhaps by a single angel,
Perhaps by a mighty host,
Perhaps by the chain that frets me,
Or the walls that shut me in;
In ways that I know and know not,
He keeps me from harm and sin.
He’s helping me now – this moment,
In pathways easy or hard,
Perhaps by a door wide open,
Perhaps by a door fast barred,
Perhaps by a joy witholden,
Perhaps by a gladness given;
In ways that I know and know not,
He’s leading me up to heaven.
He’s helping me now – this moment,
And whether I go or stand,
Perhaps by a plan accomplished,
Perhaps when He stays my hand,
Perhaps by a word in season,
Perhaps by a silent prayer;
In ways that I know and know not,
His labor of love I share.

Soaring by Alice H Mortenson

Full text:
Sometimes God takes away our props
that we might lean on Him,
allows temptations, so we’ll grow
and triumph over sin.
Sometimes He takes away our strength
for doing earthly things
to rest our bodies that our souls
may soar on eagle’s wings.
Let’s not resent it when He says,
“Come ye apart – Be still”
or chafe at disappointments
that are His sovereign will.
Oh, let’s not doubt or question “Why?”
with unexplained delays,
but keep on soaring ‘neath His wings
with gratitude and praise!

Have You Taken It to Jesus? by Mrs EL Hennessay

Full text:
Have you taken it to Jesus?
Have you left your burden there?
Does He tenderly support you?
Have you rolled on Him your care?
Oh, the sweet unfailing refuge
Of the everlasting arms;
In their loving clasp enfolded
Nothing worries or alarms.
Have you taken it to Jesus,
Just the thing that's pressing now?
Are you trusting Him completely
With the when, and where and how?
Oh, the joy of full surrender
Of our life, our plans, our all;
Proving, far above our asking
That God answers when we call.
Have you taken it to Jesus?
'Tis the only place to go
If you want the burden lifted
And a solace for your woe.
Oh, the blessedness to nestle
Like a child upon His breast;
Finding ever, as He promised
Perfect comfort, peace and rest.

Step by Step & Don't Carry the Burdens of Tomorrow by Barbara C Ryberg

Full text:
Step By Step
He does not lead me year by year
Nor even day by day.
But step by step my path unfolds;
My Lord directs my way.
Tomorrow’s paths I do not know,
I only know this minute;
But He will say, “This is the way,
By faith now walk ye in it.”
And I am glad that it is so.
Today’s enough to bear;
And when tomorrow comes, His grace
Shall far exceed its care.
What need to worry then, or fret?
The God who gave His Son
Holds all my moments in His hand
And gives them, one by one.
– Barbara C. Ryberg
Don’t Carry the Burdens of Tomorrow
God broke our years into hours and days,
That hour by hour, and day by day,
Just going on a little way,
We might be able, all along,
To keep quite strong.
Should all the weight of life be laid
Across our shoulders at just one place,
And the future, rife with woe and struggle,
Meet us face to face:
We could not go;
Our feet would stop, and so
God lays a little on us every day.
And never, I believe, in all life’s way,
Will burdens bear so deep,
Or pathways lie so steep,
But we can go, if, by God’s power,
We only bear the burden of the hour.

When I Can't Sleep by Alice Hansche Mortenson

Full text:
When I couldn’t sleep
I used to count sheep,
As I tossed on my restless bed,
But since I‘ve known Him
I quietly lie
And talk to the Shepherd instead.
And I pray for the sheep
Who have gone astray,
And ask Him to tenderly hold
The little sick lambs,
So torn by the way,
And bring them back to the fold.
And He whispers to me
As I softly repeat
Sweet promises found in His Word.
And my burdens grow less
As I ask Him to bless,
For I know that the Shepherd has heard!

The Earth is Round by Margaret Epp

Summary: Thirteen year old Cornelia and her family leave their Russian homeland because the czar had broken his promise, and an entire colony of Russian Mennonites was moving to Canada. Homesteading in Candada was difficult and meant struggling with harsh, primitive conditions. Deaths of loved ones left Cornelia shaken and bitter, her heart searching for peace. Despite the fact that her parents and grandmother had found the truth of salvation throgh faith in Jesus Christ, Cornelia struggles to understand and believe. A story of spiritual erosion, God's faithfulness, and restoration and hope, with a sobering reminder—our time of peace and prosperity could quickly change.
